Anthony Fauci and Senator Rand Paul turn a Senate hearing into a shouting match over whether U.S. money funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Paul says Fauci lied to Congress; Fauci retorts, “If anybody is lying here, it is you.” The exchange settles nothing about the funding it concerns, and most coverage scores the round for Fauci rather than weighing the underlying question.

The CDC now puts Delta at 83% of U.S. cases. Researchers estimate India’s true death toll near 4 million, roughly ten times the official count, a reminder of how far reported figures can sit from reality. At the same time STAT reports that states are sitting on millions of surplus doses set to expire, evidence that demand has stalled well short of official targets.

Abroad the coercion draws crowds into the streets. France softens its new “green pass” rules after tens of thousands protest requirements for cafes, bars, and shopping centers. Health experts tell NBC that vaccine mandates become far more likely once the FDA grants full approval, removing what one former official calls the main legal and public-relations barrier to compelling the shots.
