Hospitals report a nurse staffing crisis as the Delta surge continues. The AP and NBC describe nurses quitting from exhaustion or leaving for lucrative travel-agency contracts, which strips the same wards that cannot spare them. The wave of vaccine mandates now spreading through health systems threatens to push more staff out, worsening the shortage the hospitals blame the virus for.

The New York Times publishes an op-ed by ACLU staff arguing that vaccine mandates protect freedom rather than curtail it, a notable turn for an organization long wary of state coercion over the body. In The Atlantic, a separate essay asks how long Australia can keep its harsh emergency restrictions and still call itself a free country, a question much of the coverage elsewhere avoids.

Axios reports that early Israeli booster data is giving U.S. officials hope, even as the CDC warns providers not to give the vaccine off-label for boosters or young children. The booster campaign is being built on another country’s rollout, whose durability is still unknown, while the agency insists no one jump ahead of its own timeline.
