The Intercept publishes more than 900 pages of records obtained through a FOIA lawsuit on U.S.-funded coronavirus research at a lab in Wuhan. The documents revive questions about gain-of-function work and its oversight, a line of inquiry that officials and much of the press had waved off as a conspiracy theory a year earlier. China, for its part, pushes a counter-story pointing at a lab in North Carolina.

Hospitals across the South stay under strain. NPR reports that ECMO, the highest level of mechanical life support, is nearly impossible to find as waitlists grow, and CNN quotes doctors surprised to see record hospitalizations in places hit hard the year before. Nearly 350 children are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Texas.

The pandemic unemployment benefits lapse over the holiday weekend, affecting an estimated 7.5 million people, and The Economist notes that Americans remain unusually skeptical of the vaccine, trailing only Russians in expressed doubts.

You’ll read lots of different figures on this — six months, eight months, more — and that’s because the research is ongoing. We don’t yet have a concrete answer.

By surveying ~5,000 citizens across five Asian countries/territories, the authors show that increased awareness of the COVID-19 pandemic reduced self-reported propensity to consume wildlife products. A behavioural intervention simulation also suggests that increasing awareness of zoonotic risks could reduce future wildlife consumption.
