Merck opens the month with the announcement that its antiviral pill molnupiravir cut hospitalizations and deaths by roughly half in recently infected patients. Reuters calls it a “huge advance” and Science an “unquestionably a game changer,” language that runs ahead of the data, which comes from an interim analysis rather than final results. Merck says it will seek emergency authorization.

The booster campaign is contested inside the government on the same day. The New York Times reports that top F.D.A. scientists have questioned whether additional shots are imminently needed, an unusual public break with the administration’s messaging. Meanwhile California becomes the first state to announce it will require the vaccine for schoolchildren once each age group wins full F.D.A. approval, a mandate that reaches down to children whose risk of severe disease is very low.

As the death toll nears 700,000, the press settles on a partisan map for it. The New York Times’ “Red Covid” framing and PBS reporting that the virus is killing rural Americans at twice the urban rate tie the toll to vaccination gaps in Republican-leaning areas. The Washington Post reports that several hundred Virginia health workers have already been suspended or fired over vaccine mandates, an early sign of the attrition to come.
